The fireworks festival in Japan happens every summer. People wear yukata (summer kimono) and the environment is completely different from the usual one.
They are long, about 1h with 1 or 2 breaks and usually there is no space to between people. All the festivals are very very crowded and if you don't arrive early you will never find your friends.
Some of my friends go in the morning to keep a good place and spend all day waiting for the fireworks.
